Kiln And Studio

Kiln

We fire in a 150 cubic foot single chamber woodfired kiln.  We love the act of firing and we wanted to do it fairly often so we chose to build of moderate size.  It takes about one cord of wood to reach cone 9/10.  The efficiency of our kiln ties into another part of our philosophy.  We wanted to make our process as sustainable as we could.  Most or all of our fuel wood is coming right from our woodlot here in Vermont, from the large mature White Pine and Hemlock that surrounds us.  This gives us the ability to replace each tree we fell with a new young growing tree which consumes more CO2 than an old, mature one.  And, most importantly we choose to fire with wood because we just love woodfired pots;  the flashing, ash modified glazes, and warmth that only come from a wood fired kiln.

Studio

We are currently renovating a turn of the century 14′x24′  barn to become our new studio.  Construction is going along at a good clip and we hope to have it finished by mid to late summer 2011.  When it’s all done we should have a cozy little studio on the first floor heated by one of the woodstoves which came with our old farmstead.  The second floor will make a nice little gallery space to show our pots and a balcony to let in lots of light from the new south facing windows we are installing .
