Wood Fired Kiln

Our Kiln

In 2010 we built a 150 cubic foot cross draft wood fired kiln.  The kiln design was inspired by a Thai-style Anagama kiln.  The chamber of the kiln consists of an inner lining of refractory rotary kiln blocks.  A layer of ceramic fiber and a layer of clay/sawdust cob provide the backup insulation.  Main stoking is through a stokehole built into the door of the kiln and sidestoking is possible through six stokeholes further along the kiln toward the chimney.  We use 1 to 2 cords of wood per firing and achieve colorful flashing effects and minimal ash accumulation.
